Coming Out Day Open Mic
Thursday, October 13th from 9:30PM to 11:30AM
Red Lion Cafe, Rutgers Student Center, College Avenue
*This week’s event takes the place of our regular weekly meeting*
Co-Sponsored by the Queer Student Alliance of Rutgers University and LLEGO, the LGBTQQIA People of Color Organization at Rutgers University.
Coming Out Day is a national event celebrating the visibility of queer people all over the country. This year coming out day is on October 11th, but we will be having our event during QSA’s regular meeting time on Thursday, October 13th.
For this year’s event, QSA & LLEGO will be hosting an open mic. Everyone is invited to come and share your coming out stories with us! You can also read a poem, do a spoken-word piece, play a ukulele, whatever you like! Allies are also more than welcome to share their stories as well!
You can sign up to share your story by emailing us ahead of time at qsa.rutgers@gmail.com, you will also be able to sign up during the event, so no worries if you’re undecided.
We will be providing lots of food & beverages so come hungry!
We will also be premiering “Faces of the Rutgers Queer Community”, a collaborative photography project about being queer/allied and visible at Rutgers, which many of you have already signed up to participate in. If you haven’t and would like to, or just want to know more, see the Facebook event.
Faces of the Rutgers Queer Community Project
Monday, October 10th – Wednesday 13th
On of the most important issues we face as a community built around differing sexualities is visibility. For this project, we will be taking studio portraits of volunteers from all around Rutgers who identify as part of the queer community or an ally.
This project is being done by the executive board of The Queer Student Alliance as part of national Coming Out Day, the photographs we take will be displayed at our Coming Out Day event on October 13th.
We will be photographing in a studio space at Mason Gross School of the Arts, Room 345 on the third floor (in the back hall near the lounge and right across from the vending machines)
Time slots are available on the Facebook event, or by emailing us a qsa.rutgers@gmail.com. Walk-ins are also welcome! If you would like more information about this project, please email us at qsa.rutgers@gmail.com
This Week’s Meeting: Coming Out as an Ally
**IMPORTANT: THIS WEEK’S MEETING WILL NOT BE IN OUR REGULAR ROOM**
Before & during our regular meeting time, Thursday, September 29th from 8:00PM to 11:00PM
Livingston Hall in the Livingston Student Center, Livingston Campus
The Queer Student Alliance along with the Center for Social Justice and LGBT Communities is hosting an event this Thursday that runs during our regular meeting time. It is called Coming Out as an Ally and will be held from 8:00PM to 11:00PM in Livingston Hall in the Livingston Student Center. The main event will end at 10:00PM and the QSA will have the room for a discussion afterwards until 11:00PM, so it’s ok if you come late!
So join us for a panel on what it means to be an ally who is active in the LGBTQQIA community, and has a strong interest in promoting LGBTQQIA equal rights. Panelists will discuss how they became allies and issues surrounding advocacy, followed by an opportunity for questions from the audience. Afterwards the QSA will hold a group discussion on being an good ally within and without the community, and about Rutgers & anti-bullying. For more info check out the Facebook Event.
Rutgers Queer Life & History Featured in 1766 Magazine
This article from 1766, The Rutgers Alumni Magazine, features an article called Speaking Out: 40 Years of Activism and Community Building at Rutgers. It gives a history of queer life and activism at Rutgers, starting with Lionel Cuffie who in December of 1969 began the Student Homophile League which in time evolved into our present organization, the QSA.
Welcome to the QSA Official Website!
Welcome to the official website of The Queer Student Alliance of Rutgers University! We are currently undergoing some modifications because of our recent name change from “Bisexuals, Gays, Lesbians, & Allies of Rutgers University”, or “BiGLARU” to “The Queer Student Alliance of Rutgers University”, or “QSA”.
Our regular meetings are scheduled to resume on Thursday, September 15th, 2011 at the beginning of the Rutgers academic year, but you can keep in contact with us during the summer by joining our Facebook group or following us on Twitter! Just see our “Links” section for all our social media pages and links to other great groups and information at Rutgers University.
For all incoming freshmen, transfer students, and upperclassmen who would like to learn more about us, come to our table at the Rutgers Fall Involvement Fair; times & details are posted in our “Community Events” section.
